Summer Organizing Giveaway

Photo by Linda SamuelsSummer is the time to slow down, tackle those organizing projects and enjoy vacation time. One powerful motivator for getting things accomplished is having a time deadline. For example, knowing the bags have to be packed before the plane takes off or the minivan leaves for the family road trip creates an urgency to be ready. For the Summer Organizing Giveaway, I’ve put together some fun travel-related organizing tips and giveaways.

Organizing Travel Tips

  • The List: Yes, we can try to keep all the details in our heads, but making a list of the items you want to take, makes packing easier and less stressful. After writing your list, “go shopping” in your drawers and closets. Gather items onto a large, flat surface and then pack away.
  • The Containers: You can just throw things willy-nilly into your bags, but grouping items together in packing cubes or Ziploc bags will keep you and your suitcase organized. Packing cubes can also be used as drawer organizers when you arrive at your destination.
  • The Nourishment: Bring items to feed both the mind and the body. For the body, pack some travel snacks (nuts, dried fruit, mints or chocolate) because you never know when hunger might strike. For the mind, travel light and download your favorite books to your electronic reader. The Other Side of Organized just became available for the iPad, iPhone, Kindle and Nook. It will soon be available on Sony Reader too.
  • The Last Minutes:  Before any trip, there are always last minute things to do and purchase. Keep an extra list nearby to capture those “to do” thoughts that pop into your head. Having your action list nearby will help keep you focused and worry-free about not forgetting to cancel the newspaper, hold your mail or buy extra sunscreen.

The Summer Organizing Giveaway starts on July 14th.  One winner will be selected on July 21st.  It includes goodies that will organize, inspire, relax and delight you.  Continue reading for description and contest rules. The winner will receive everything described below:

I'm not much of a traveller, so all of my trips have been memorable. Most recently, I went to Montreal for the 2010 POC National Conference. It was the first time I've travelled alone and I actually enjoyed having a room to myself and going out on my own to see the sites (and even a movie!).

It takes me FOREVER to pack, b/c I'm anal about making my lists and packing one item at a time. I have to, otherwise I'll be on my way to fetch something... and forget what it is before I'm there. I just left a vacation, and left stuff in the refrigerator. Why? I didn't make a list!

Oh -- my favorite part of your Oh So Organizing site is your enormous smile on the home page. That, and the Organizing Success Secrets. Makes me feel like I have a fighting chance!

When we are travelling by car and will be staying somewhere where I will actually unpack our bags (like my mom's or at a beach cottage), I like to pack in laundry baskets. They serve double duty as clothes (or linen) transporters on the way to our vacation destination and as clothes hampers while on vacation.

My favorite vacation spot so far is Alaska. In 2008, my husband experienced his great adventure and spent 6 weeks in Alaska hiking and camping, doing all those things. I joined him for the last 10 days for the Bed and Breakfast tour. What a beautiful place.

I love your new website. I especially like everything you have listed under informaiton. I also like motivational quotes, and I love the way you have included that on your website. Maybe one of them will spur me into action.

I was lucky enough to go to Italy a few years ago; it was absolutely wonderful and everyone should go there at least once in their life. With the new travel limitations, even with international travel, one has to pack well. Eagle Creek has a some great travel products, like compression folders that kept my shirts, dresses, and pants folded nicely (it comes with a hard plastic sheet used to help compress and a useful folding guide), plus I fit so many more clothes in a smaller space. It was so nice to be able find my clothes organized and not wrinkly!

Sounds like a great trip to Montreal, Janet. I love going to conferences, especially NAPO & ICD. I haven't gone it to the fabulous POC one yet. I just keep hearing about them from all my Canadian buddies. Like you, I also enjoy having my own room at conferences. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Elise- I hear you on the list making. When I'm feeling particularly carefree, I "wing it," but more often than not, I use a list to guide me. Otherwise, as you experienced, there's a good chance I will forget something.

Thanks also for your lovely feedback on the redesign of the Oh, So site. I'm especially glad to know that you found the Organizing Success Secrets an encouraging read.

July 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLinda Samuels

Andi, what a super clever idea using the laundry baskets to serve as double duty for the road trip vacations! Love it! Thanks for sharing.

Your Alaska trip sounds incredible, Sherry. 'd like to visit there in the future. The B&B tour sounds like a wonderful way to experience it too.

I'm so glad to hear that you like the newly redesigned Oh, So site. The Organizing One-Liners are fun to write and it's nice to know that you find them motivating. Thank you for participating in the conversation.

Elisa- Italy is one of my favorite places to visit. It's been several years since our last trip there and I can still taste the tortellini! The Eagle Creek pack-it cubes are favorite travel products of mine too. You might have noticed that I included a few of them in the Summer Organizing Giveaway. The other products you mentioned of theirs are also fantastic. Thanks for joining in the conversation.

I am an uber-organizer so I adore anything that helps me 'contain' my stuff & keep lists! Before I go on vacation, I create a poster-size 'Don't Forget' list in 72 sz font on my front door so as I grab the door handle, I am forced to look at the list that is bullet-pointed in huge type (can't miss it) especially on the day of the trip!
When I traveled to Italy for 2 weeks with my daughter, that list included: Passport, Weigh suitcase (keep under 50lbs), setting thermostat at certain degree, turning off water, note to family with location of important documents & itinerary & sending a copy of same to family member.
The list worked great and turning off the water saved me - returned to find the water pipe had broken but thanks to having it turned off, saved my home from 2 weeks of flood!
Now I use the list everytime I travel :)

July 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHelena

Helena- What a creative use of a list! I can see that big type and am loving it! Even better is how effectively you used it to help keep you on track and preventing potential problems. Excellent! Thank you for sharing & for joining in the conversation.

My favorite vacation spot... it's hard to choose just one. I would say that in the United States anywhere that has the ocean and a beach is my favorite place to vacation. My dream vacation however, is to go to Spain for 3-4 weeks. I lived there for 3 years as a young girl and learned to speak the language. I really, really want to go back there!

July 15, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNatalie Conrad

Hey Linda I checked out your website and I love the little summer video. What platform/software did you use? Your site is very crisp and clean - peaceful... You also have a great picture on the home page. You certainly enjoy what you do!

July 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNatalie Conrad

Natalie- So great to hear from you. Nothing quite says "vacation" to me like the beach. I have many fond memories of assorted time spent with family & friends by the water. I love your "dream" vacation idea in Spain. I'm sure it will happen for you.

Thanks for visiting the Oh,So site. The video is done using Animoto (Animoto.com) Check out their site. It's an easy & fun way to create videos. You are right that I LOVE what I do. Glad to know it comes through. Thank you for joining the conversation.

Hi Julie-

OK, Linda. One of my favorite travel organizing tips has to do with clothing and has saved me from tearing my hair out when packing. Pack all clothes around one basic color be it black brown or navy (or a signature color if someone has one). This way, all clothes and shoes will mix and match and little time will need to be spent getting dressed. I'll be sharing this one with my readers, soon...

July 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStacey Agin Murray

Stacey- What a fabulous travel organizing tip! It absolutely makes packing & traveling easier when you coordinate around a base color. I do this too, with black being my basic to build from. I LOVE color and all colors look great with black. I'm sure everyone will appreciate the great advice that you shared. Thank you for joining the conversation.

We are in Hawaii and it is definitely our favorite vacation spot! I'm a fan of using ziploc baggies to organize items while traveling. They work perfectly and if something leaks, it's a quick clean up. Always carry a few extra for the trip home.

July 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterConnie Buskness

Connie- How lovely that you are in Hawaii now AND that it's one of your favorite vacation spots. I've only traveled there once and have very fond memories. I'm remembering GIANT waves and one of the scariest and most spectacular helicopter rides ever. Big & beautiful come to mind.

Ziploc bags are a great travel accessory. As you said, they are great for organizing and confining leaks. I like to throw various sized ones in my suitcase for unexpected needs.

Thanks for joining the conversation AND have a wonderful rest of your vacation.

Travel Tips;
1) If you're going to a resort & are arriving before check-in time, pack a change of clothes in your carry on so you can change into beachwear and start enjoying right away. Even when we check baggage, I keep one small roll-on to carry aboard the plane with change of clothes for the whole family.
2) If you're traveling with kids on a plane, take sticker books vs. coloring book to avoid trying to chase down dropped crayons under your seats (or watching them roll down the aisles).
3) I keep all passports, itineraries, confirmation letters, tickets, etc. in one portfolio that goes into my carry-on or purse and is easily accessible in one place.

July 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAlissa

Alissa- Thanks for sharing these great travel tips. I particularly like the one about packing beachwear into your carry on so that arriving early doesn't prevent the fun from starting. Just brilliant! I appreciate you joining in the conversation.
