How to Embrace the Changes with Awareness and Delight

There are more frequent moments of enjoying the sun and noticing the season beginning to change. That change has not completely happened yet. We are straddling the dark of winter with glimpses of the warmth and lightness of spring. Simple moments bring my attention to the changes.

The sun’s presence has increased my awareness of the change-filled moments. They can be felt and seen in many ways. Sitting by the window in a café, I felt the hot sun streaming through as it warmed my skin and calmed my soul. Walking through my living room I saw the sun cast its bold streams of light and shadow across the space. Sitting outdoors on a bench, the sun bathed my body and face with its heat. Moving along the path by the river, I felt unencumbered because I only needed to wear a very light jacket on that sunny, warm day.

“We change without realizing it. We are in the midst of change even now.”

- Haemin Sunim

The season is changing. The sun is getting stronger as the daylight lasts longer. In small ways each day, I can see and feel change happening. I delight in and embrace these joy-filled moments. I am grateful for the visible changes. They are a source of hope and movement. They mirror the possibility of changes that are harder to see.

What changes are you sensing? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Come join the conversation!

Well, I think I'd have to toss "aging" into this category. I sense it and see it creeping in, and am trying to embrace the journey! The ever-increasing daylight is a change I embrace every year. It is surprisingly energizing and hopeful, even when the snow still covers the ground. I love the quote about how change is a constant, if unacknowledged, companion. I think this is a helpful image to embrace... if change is always happening, we can let go of the urge to cling to or maintain the status quo.

@Seana- Aging is a beautiful thing. With it comes wisdom, experience, perspective and more compassion for self and others. And yes..there are a few more lines, bulges, and creaks, but they are there as reminders of change. I agree with you about how the increase of daylight is so affirming. I LOVE light...especially natural sunlight. The idea of letting go as integral to change is so apt. Holding on too tightly to what was, makes us less appreciative and aware of what is and what's becoming.

I like to think about change more than others. I embrace the seasonal and daylight changes, especially since I am an early morning walker and see the sun earlier at this time of year thankfully. As I notice change, I find that I am more comfortable with all change. It's been powerfully comforting.

@Ellen- Early morning walker? That's awesome! I imagine that it's quite a different experience walking when it's lighter than when it's still dark out. So the "change" is very apparent. It's also interesting what you said about how noticing change (as in the change of seasons) helps you be more comfortable with all types of change...."powerfully comforting." I love that!

I'm another early morning walker - I take my dog out at 7 AM most days, before the streets get filled with school buses and foot traffic. Just this morning I noticed that sunrise was at 6:59 and I rejoiced that we'll no longer be walking in the dark!

@Janet- Isn't it great how having a dog is one way to guarantee those daily walks? Wonderful noticing of the sunrise change. I am SO appreciating the light...pools of sunlight that stream in, sun warming me up and dosing me with extra Vitamin D! Love the increase in light.
