Why Do I Love Helping People Get Organized?

When I was growing up, my parents used to have conversations with us about our future goals and desires. Their philosophy, which they practiced in addition to preaching, was to follow your passion and do work that you loved. If you did that, it wouldn’t feel like work. I watched both of my parents create successful careers that they were passionate about in music and computer graphics.

As a young adult with my parents’ sage advice deeply instilled, I launched my organizing services company in 1993, Oh, So Organized! The concept was simple. Combine my love of helping people with my organizing abilities to help those that were challenged by the disorganization in their lives. While I identified organizing as a skill that I was born with, I also recognized that it was teachable skill. For the past 25 years, I’ve had the privilege of working in a field that I’m passionate about.

In the book Wait, What? James Ryan writes . . .

“Luckily for all of us, many people are interested in helping others; some devote their careers and lives to it. Not everyone is so inclined, of course, and most people are self-interested at least some of the time. An evolutionary biologist or psychologist might say that we are always self-interested, and that our effort to help others is simply our attempt to feel good about ourselves.”


I understand Ryan’s perspective, but I view helping others as a win-win scenario. The person needing help receives that help. It’s a win for them. As a result the helper feels good too. A personal win. It’s a positive scenario. The key is giving help that the receiver wants in a compassionate, non-judgmental way. It’s essential to focus on the receiver’s needs and not what we think they need. Being respectful and listening is essential.

Helping others to get organized isn’t just about organizing life’s stuff. It includes clarifying goals, editing the unessential, honing decision-making skills, letting go of the things that no longer support you, changing habits, and setting up viable, organizing systems. The process requires time and patience. It can be messy and emotional. I have such admiration for the way my clients face overwhelm and organizing challenges. They have such determination and never give up. They inspire me every day. I love being part of their journey and feel honored to have their trust. Offering help is a huge reason why I love my job. We all need help, at different times and for different tasks. Nothing makes me happier than being able to come alongside, alleviate some stress, implement solutions and make life better. I honestly think this profession is full of helpers who are completely non-judgmental and simply cherish the privilege of being invited in!

@Seana- It's a beautiful thing. And I love what you say about our profession being "full of helpers." So true. Life can be stressful. Being able to "alleviate" some of that stress for others makes for happy all around. Your clients are lucky to have you in their lives.

I love what Seana said about being helpers. Not only do so many of us truly love helping our clients we also love helping each other. I don't know of very many professions where the individual business owners collaborate so freely.

I agree that helping others in a win-win scenario. We professional organizers (the helpers) feel good, and those we help feel wonderful reaching their goals. I also admire how my clients face overwhelm, stay motivated and work to create habits to improve their lives. People who reach out for organizing help to make a positive life change are so inspiring!

I love the idea of a loyalty program to keep customers coming back.

While I don't do as much on-site organizing anymore, I do offer services to small businesses in the administrative as well as office organizing areas. I do offer referral discounts and other discounts to returning customers.

One of the reasons I moved away from organizing professionally is that although I love organizing stuff, I wasn't so comfortable helping people with the process. There's lots more training available now, but I love my new (well, not so new anymore) direction.

@Sabrina- That's wonderful to have a referral and other discount programs to reward clients/customers. There are many ways to show how we value their business. In addition to those, they really appreciate having an ongoing program they benefit from.

I love this post, Linda! It completely resonates with me. Having started my career as a social worker and then gained Pro Organizer training, I've clearly stayed within the helping realm. And I love your point about giving the person the help that they want, not what we think they need. We must always remember the platinum rule = Treat others they way they want to be treated!

It's too easy to let our own agenda get in the way of truly helping the person that's asking for help. I'm guessing that with your training, you're especially skilled with listening.
